Jacksonville Healthcare Town Hall and Jobs 4 Jax Rally!
Representative Audrey Gibson, North Central Florida Labor Council President Russell Harper, and Representative Jones. On 7/27/2009, Jacksonville workers and the community joined together to hear stories about Healthcare, and to support the President's Healthcare plan. Senator Tony Hill and Representative Audrey Gibson moderated the discussion. Organizing for America Deputy Field Director Chris Turner introduced guests and speakers, among them Representative Jones. The public gave their stories and asked questions of the elected officials, OFA, and Labor. For the National Call to Action on the 28th, the North Central Florida Labor Council and the North Florida Building Trades mobilized Jobs 4 Jax. After rallying at Hemming Plaza, members from the community joined the ranks of workers and attended the Jacksonville City Council meeting. The issue at hand involved bids for construction on a major city project, the courthouse. No local Labor was being used to build a multimillion dollar project paid for by tax payer money. Lead by the Building Trades President John Parker, and North FL CLC President Russell Harper, workers and community members delivered a message to the City Council focusing on using primarily local Labor.
